Las Vegas, NV- Today, Nevada Republican Party Chairman Michael McDonald released the following statement:

“The Chairman of the Republican National Committee Reince Priebus has the authority to take the necessary steps to support a candidate to ensure Republicans win the presidency in November. RNC Rule 11 applies to the RNC’s ability to make endorsements and spend resources in state races and may have been misinterpreted by some in Nevada in its application to the presidential election. Ron Paul's campaign released a statement on May 5 providing Chairman Priebus and the RNC their "full consent" to move forward with setting up Victory organizations. Certainly we do not need to wait for Tampa before assisting our presumptive nominee. I look forward to working with Chairman Priebus and Republicans across the state of Nevada as we build a top-notch ground game to beat Barack Obama and elect Mitt Romney to the White House.”

Las Vegas – In an appearance on last night’s Face to Face with Jon Ralston, Democratic challenger for Congress in Nevada’s 3rd District, John Oceguera, refused to answer questions on a wide range of issues including the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare, the 2009 stimulus bill, Medicare, Medicaid, education, and the foreclosure crisis.

“John Oceguera’s comments regarding economic priorities for Southern Nevada were disingenuous at best,” said Assemblyman Mark Sherwood who worked alongside Oceguera in the 2011 legislative session. “While the City of North Las Vegas teetered on the edge of bankruptcy, Oceguera was taking more than $400,000 from the city coffers as an absentee firefighter. We don’t need those ‘priorities’ in Washington.”

Rather than provide his positions on the issues, or his solutions to the challenges facing Nevada families, Oceguera chose instead to resort to Democratic Party talking points. When asked by the host what Joe Heck could have done that he didn’t do, Oceguera again had no answers:· “You’re afraid to take a position on this bill,” said Face to Face host Jon Ralston, after Oceguera refused to answer whether or not he would have supported the Affordable Care Act in Congress.

· “I got close to a ‘yes’ out of him by the end of the first segment,” Ralston added, after a vague answer on whether the Affordable Care Act is worth the additional $574 million in Medicaid costs to Nevada.

· “I can’t get you to take a position [on the stimulus bill],” pressed Ralston, after Oceguera side-stepped his question on the effectiveness of Barack Obama’s 2009 $800 billion stimulus package.

· “This is what Democrats do,” continued Ralston. “They criticize Republicans for the Ryan Budget, and say they’re going to end Medicare, but then they have no plan at all to fix Medicare.”

Oceguera offered only one solution to help protect Medicare, which was to cut waste. He claimed he had done that in his job as Nevada Assembly Speaker, despite spending an estimated $30,000 of taxpayer dollars installing a state-of-the-art legislative gym after dozens of legislative layoffs.

“It appears that John Oceguera’s only priority is going to Washington, and not giving the voters of Southern Nevada the answers they need and deserve,” added Assemblyman John Hambrick. “It is unfortunate that he is continuing his lackluster approach to the challenges facing our community.”

(Las Vegas, NV) - Today, Nevada Republican Party Chairman James Smack released the following statement regarding the Buffett Tax vote in the U.S. Senate.

“There is one thing you need to know about President Obama’s Buffett Tax – it won’t help a single Nevada family find a job. The facts are simple, President Obama has once again chosen politics over fixing the economy,” said Chairman Smack.

“The President’s hard sell on this tax has been all over the place. First, Obama claimed the Buffett Tax would, “stabilize our debt and deficit for the next ten years,” and when that was proven false, he claimed it wasn’t meant for deficit reduction. President Obama has changed his explanation for this tax no less than six times, but not once did he claim this tax would improve the economy or help folks find a job – and that’s what this all boils down to – a shiny object that does nothing to help struggling Americans.

“President Obama should be focused on fixing the economy, but he’s spending his time rolling out political gimmicks. This President is focused on saving one job – his own– and he’s resorted to the politics of division and envy to achieve his goal.

“I applaud the Senate for voting down the Obama’s Buffett gimmick. Nevada families deserve better; they deserve real leadership and someone who is focused on helping Americans struggling in this economy.”

(Las Vegas, NV) -- Shelley Berkley has spent so much time in Washington, she seems to think she no longer answers to Nevadans. While the House Ethics Committee continues to look into her increasing bank account and the reasons for it, Shelley Berkley owes us some answers.

“After fourteen years in Washington, you would think Congresswoman Shelley Berkley would have learned by now how to address charges of unethical behavior. Nevadans are reasonable people. If the House Ethics Committee and other watchdog groups are wrong, then all she has to do is explain why,” said David Gallagher, Executive Director of the Nevada Republican Party.

How much did you and your husband profit through the contract with the University Medical Center?

Shouldn’t you have recused yourself at the very beginning of this process?

Looking back, do you think you should have disclosed that you were fighting for a multi-million dollar contract for your husband?

The independent, non-partisan Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) found enough evidence to recommend you to the House Ethics Committee. What did OCE find that hasn’t already been made public?

Have you cast any other votes in Congress that have benefitted your husband’s business?

How can you be a credible, effective leader in the Senate when even your House colleagues and Democrat-leaning watchdog groups question your ethics?

Do you truly believe you can run a Senate campaign while under investigation?

Are you at all concerned that even a left-leaning ethics watchdog group like Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has singled out you and just a handful of other Democrats?

Politico
John Bresnahan
March 23, 2012
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0312/74400.html

The House Ethics Committee announced Friday it was still looking into whether to open a full investigation into Rep. Shelley Berkley, the first official notification that the Nevada Democrat is under scrutiny over allegations that she used her official position to aid her husband’s business.

In a statement issued by the House Ethics Committee, the secretive panel said it was extending the review period on the Berkley case until July 9. This comes after a recommendation from the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) calling for a full investigation into Berkley.

OCE’s recommendation for a full probe of Berkley has not been previously disclosed, and is sure to become a major political issue in her Senate race against GOP Sen. Dean Heller.

The Ethics Committee is required under House rules to make a public statement announcing it will take more than original 45 days allotted to it to review an OCE recommendation. If Ethics turns down an OCE recommendation, than the report detailing OCE’s become public. If it approves the OCE request, then Ethics creates a special subcommittee with subpoena power to conduct an investigation.

The Ethics Committee adopted the July 9 deadline for determining whether to conduct a Berlkey probe because the Nevada Democrat faces a June 12 primary for the right to take on Heller. The Ethics panel cannot act on an OCE recommendation within a two-month window leading up to any election, including primaries. Once that primary has finished, the Ethics Committee’s clock on Berkley starts again.

The Nevada Republican Party filed a complaint against Berkley last September with OCE following a New York Times report detailing how the lawmaker lobbied against the closing of a kidney transplant program at a Las Vegas hospital.

Berkley’s efforts led to the program staying open. Her husband’s company - Kidney Specialists of Southern Nevada (KSSN) - later won a $738,000 per year contract from the University Medical Center. Dr. Larry Lehrner, Berkley’s husband, owns nine percent of the KSSN, according to Berkley’s aides.

Berkley has denied any conflict of interest through her intervention on behalf of the kidney program, but she later admitted to the Las Vegas Review Journal that she should have been more careful in her actions.

“This was a tough decision for me, whether or not I would weigh in,” Berkley told the Review-Journal. “I recognized that it may not look great, but I would not have been able to live with myself” by not interceding on behalf of the kidney program.

In a statement issued by campaign manager Jessica Mackley, Berkley aides noted that both Heller and former Rep. Jon Porter (R-Nev.) joined her in pressing to save the UMC kidney transplant program in early 2008.

“The Nevada Republican Party filed a complaint against Congresswoman Berkley,” Mackler said in a statement. “As the [Ethics C]ommittee reviews this complaint, they will determine that Congresswoman Shelley Berkley’s only concern is for the well being of Nevada’s patients. That’s why she fought against out-of-state Washington bureaucrats from restricting patients’ access to care and why she joined fellow Reps. Jon Porter and Dean Heller to stop Nevada’s only kidney transplant program from being shut down, which would have denied life saving treatment to hundreds of Nevadans.”

http://articles.latimes.com/2012/mar/23/news/la-pn-nevada-rep-shelley-berkley-under-ethics-investigation-20120323

Reporting from Washington — The House Ethics Committee is conducting a review of a matter involving Rep. Shelley Berkley of Nevada, posing a potential challenge for the Las Vegas Democrat running for Senate this fall in a closely-watched race that could determine which party controls the chamber.

The Ethics Committee acknowledged its work in a brief statement Friday as it said it would extend its inquiry into the matter that had been transmitted in February from the Office of Congressional Ethics. The committee did not disclose details and said the probe does not amount to a violation of ethics rules. It will have until July 9 to make public its findings.

Berkley came under scrutiny last fall after a report in the New York Times said that her husband’s medical practice benefitted after she led efforts to prevent a kidney transplant program at University Medical Center in Nevada from being shut down by federal regulators.

The transplant center was among the only one of its kind in the state, but its patient success record was poor. Other elected officials had also sought to help the program.

But Berkley’s husband, Dr. Larry Lehrner, who had once been considered for his own run for Congress in Nevada, has a stake as a partner in a medical practice with an annual contract with the hospital. The contract was $738,000 after the intervention, the New York Times reported at the time.

Berkley is running against GOP Sen. Dean Heller this fall and the Nevada Republican Party had filed an ethics complaint with the congressional office shortly after the story appeared in September.

“As the committee reviews this complaint, they will determine that Congresswoman Shelley Berkley’s only concern is for the well being of Nevada’s patients,” said Berkley campaign manager Jessica Mackler. “That’s why she fought against out-of-state Washington bureaucrats from restricting patients’ access to care and why she joined fellow Reps. Jon Porter and Dean Heller to stop Nevada’s only kidney transplant program from being shut down, which would have denied life saving treatment to hundreds of Nevadans.”

Nevada’s Senate race is expected to be one of the most closely watched this election cycle in the swing state that helped elect President Obama but includes GOP strongholds and a fierce independent streak that could tip toward Republicans.

Heller is seeking his first full term in the Senate after being appointed to the seat last year. A former House member and state official, Heller replaced GOP Sen. John Ensign who resigned following his own ethics problems after his parents provided funds to a former staffer with whom he had been having an affair.

Las Vegas, NV - Today the Executive Director of the Nevada Republican Party David Gallagher issued the following statement regarding the House Ethics Committee to extend its investigation into seven-term Congresswoman Shelley Berkley. The House Ethics Committee is run jointly by both Democrats and Republicans.

"Given Congresswoman Shelley Berkley's past ethically questionable behavior, the news that the House Ethics Committee is extending their investigation of Congresswoman Shelley Berkley comes as no surprise to Nevadans. Over her fourteen years in Washington, Congresswoman Berkley has shown that she cares more about her personal advancement than the people she is supposed to represent. Nevadans deserve better from their elected officials."

While Americans Continue Suffering at the Pump, President Obama Uses Nevada as Campaign Prop

Las Vegas, Nevada – Today Senator Michael Roberson issued the follow statement regarding President Barack Obama’s visit to Nevada to promote his energy plan.

“The campaigner-in-chief, Barack Obama, is making more trips to battleground states like Nevada because his approval ratings continue to plummet over his handling of rising gas prices. His visit to Boulder City, Nevada is nothing more than a politically motivated campaign event to try to distract Nevadans from his failed energy policy, or lack of one.

This Administration has already rejected the development of North American energy sources and the creation of tens of thousands of jobs that would be realized by building the Keystone XL pipeline. That is a mistake that President Obama is already starting to recognize only because his motivations are to protect only one job – his own.

Nevada is one of the few states in the country that has demonstrated success in renewable energy, specifically geothermal and solar energy power. We are on the cutting edge of renewable energy, but we also have some of the highest gas prices in the nation dragging down an economy that leads the nation in unemployment and home foreclosures. It’s the President’s lack of an energy plan on domestic production that is killing the Nevada economy with high gas prices now – and a fear that prices will only go higher into the summer. High gas prices may not matter to the President when taxpayers are paying for political trips on Air Force One, but I can assure you they are front and center to working Nevadans and those still looking for work,” continued Senator Roberson.
